Editorial Policy

How OurNationalHeroes chooses subjects, researches and fact-checks biographies, uses sources and images, and handles corrections and updates.

Last updated:

Readers trust OurNationalHeroes to learn about real people. This page explains the standards we follow when we research, write and update our biographies.

Choosing who we write about

We write about people whose work or life had a meaningful public impact: inventors, scientists, writers, business founders, educators, athletes, journalists, social reformers and national heroes. We also take suggestions from readers.

Research and sources

  • We rely on published, reputable sources: encyclopaedias and reference works, books and academic publications, established news organisations, and official websites of institutions, governments and the people themselves.
  • Key facts (dates, places, titles, awards and figures) are checked against more than one independent source wherever possible.
  • We prefer primary and authoritative sources over anonymous or user-generated content.
  • Where we quote someone, we quote accurately and give the context.

Writing standards

  • Every biography is written to be original, clear and useful, with a Quick Facts summary, a structured life story and a section on legacy.
  • We write fairly about controversial figures and topics, reporting what is documented rather than rumour.
  • We avoid sensationalism, and we do not publish content intended to harass, demean or mislead.

Images

We use images that are in the public domain, openly licensed, provided for press use or used for identification and commentary. We respect requests from rights holders to credit or remove images.

Corrections and updates

When we find or are told about an error, we correct it promptly. Articles are reviewed and updated when significant new information becomes available; the date of the latest update is shown on each article.

Independence

OurNationalHeroes is funded by advertising. Advertisers have no influence over which people we cover or what we write. We do not accept payment for biographies, positive coverage or links.
